Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)

Description 35-45" (89-114 cm). Brownish body with black head, long black neck, conspicuous white cheek patch. The smaller Brant has a shorter neck and lacks white cheek patch. The Cackling Goose is smaller, darker, shorter-billed, and found mainly in the West.

American Coot (Fulica americana)

 Description 15" (38 cm). A gray, duck-like bird with white bill and frontal shield, white undertail coverts, and lobed toes. Frontal shield has red swelling at upper edge, visible at close range. Immatures similar but paler, with duller bill.

Adults have short tuft of feathers over each eye during breeding season. Young birds are browner, whitish or buffy on breast, upper belly, and neck. In flight, the neck shows a slight crook, not seen in the similar Brandt's Cormorant, the larger Great Cormorant, or the smaller Neotropic.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

 

Endangered Status The Bald Eagle is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as threatened in all of the continental United States except Alaska. Our national bird suffered a dramatic decline caused by ingestion of pesticides and of lead-contaminated waterfowl. The main culprit was DDT, which was sprayed on crops to control pest damage.

Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber)

 Description 48" (1.2 m). W. 4'7" (1.4 m). Unmistakable. A tall, long-legged, long-necked pink bird with a short, down-curved bill. Wings have black tips and trailing edges.  Range Resident in Bahamas, West Indies, Yucatan, northern South America, and Galapagos Islands. A casual visitor to U.S. coast from Carolinas to Texas.

Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis)

 Four to five feet tall, and can weigh anywhere from 13-16 lbs. Long, sinuous neck, and long, extremely slender legs. Bill is bent downward in the middle. Pale pink in color, with darker pink and black wings, dull yellow or yellow-gray legs with dark pink bands at the joints, and pink feet.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

 Description 30-31" (76-79 cm). W. 6-7' 6" (1.8-2.3 m). A large blackish eagle with white head and tail and heavy yellow bill. Young birds lack the white head and tail, and resemble adult Golden Eagles, but are variably marked with white and have a black, more massive bill.

 Similar to Herring Gull but smaller, with darker gray mantle, dark eye, reddish eye ring, and greenish legs. Bill of breeding adult has red spot overlapped by black. Winter and immature birds have black subterminal bar on bill and lack red eye ring of adults. A common inland gull.

Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus)

Male has bright rufous upperparts and flanks and iridescent orange-red throat. Female green above, with rufous tinge on rump and flanks, and much rufous in tail. Adult male Allen's Hummingbird has green crown and back; female and immature Allen's not safely separable from Rufous in field, but have narrower outer tail feathers. Female Ruby-throated and Black-chinned similar, but lack rufous on rump and flanks. See Calliope and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds.

Dark-eyed (Junco Junco hyemalis)

 Description 5-6 1/4" (13-16 cm). This species shows much geographic variation in color. Typically, male of western population ("Oregon Junco") has black hood, chestnut mantle, white underparts with buff sides. Eastern male ("Slate-colored Junco") is dark slate-gray on head, upper breast, flanks, and upperparts, with white lower breast and belly.

 Native to some parts of Australia. A brightly coloured gregarious parrot that feeds primarily on pollen, nectar and fruits, but will feed on grains. Almost always seen in pairs or in flocks, which can contain up to a thousand birds. Like most parrots they nest in hollow limbs or trunks of dead or living trees. They are prolific, with pairs known to rear as many as three successive broods in a single season thus enabling the population to increase rapidly.

 Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides)

Description 7" (18 cm). Male pure sky-blue above, paler blue below, with a white abdomen; female similar, but duller and grayer.

Habitat Breeds in high mountain meadows with scattered trees and bushes; in winter descends to lower elevations, where it occurs on plains and grasslands.

Nesting 5 or 6 pale blue eggs in a nest of grass and plant fibers built in a natural cavity or bird box.
